ISLAND BAY TRAGEDY

USE OF UNLICENSED CAR

A sequel to the recent motor tragedy at Island Bay which involved the loss of four lives was heard at the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon when Norman Meyers pleaded guilty before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., to a charge of affixing unauthorised number plates to a motor-car. John Edward Fitzgerald' pleaded guilty to a charge of permitting the use. of an unlicensed car. Sub-Inspector Martin said that after the accident it was ascertained that the car concerned was fitted with number plates belonging to another car. The car had been driven to Island Bay by Gerald Fitzgerald; a son of one of the defendants, who said he did not know that the car was not entitled to have the plates fitted. The car belonged to Meyers Motors, a company in which the two defendants were partners. , ; The defendant Fitzgerald objected; to the Sub-Inspector introducing ■ the subject of the ■ accident. Fitzgerald , said that the plates in question had never before been used on a motor-car, and were lying about the garage wrapped up in paper. Meyers thought that as the plates had been purchased and had not been used he was entitled to use them. Fitzgerald said that when he lent the car to his son for the evening he was unaware that the new plates had been attached. He thought that dealer's plates Were fitted.
