AMALGAMATION PROBLEM
A LEAD SOUGHT
(By Telegrapii.) (Special to "The Evening Past.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. That the Government should give a lead in the/matter of local-body amalgamation was an opinion expressed at yesterday's meeting of the Kairanga Council when the ; matter was up/for discussion..; The chairman (Councillor W.Coliis) expressed the opinion that as far as his county was concerned there was not much to'be saved by amalgamation. . Councillor AY. G. Shannon contended that the Government set up too many boards ■■ and commissions, when fewer would be in the country's interests. The Chairman: I 'think you arc quite right. - .. • ;. •■-.■ >. ■■■'■' Avoidance of over-lapping in localbody' control was needed; said Councillor C. Anderson! If. amaigamatibn. of local bodies were proposed, said Councillor P. G. Mil don, he took it that the matter would be discussed by a commission. •Members: Yes. At the recent conference of district local bodies, said the chairman, he had' mentioned the. matter of high hospital levies. He thought that 'there was room for-some alteration;in. tho, collection of the' levies, and that the "matter "was one that the Government would have to go into before long. The amount the county was paying was out of all proportion; by thY time that it had found £3000 for hospital rates, there was hot much left • for countyworks. Councillor M. A. Moody: Do you think that hospital rating should be altered to a population, basis?. The chairman said; the present principle was wrong. ' ; . . " ' The county clerk. (Mr. N. I. Nielsen) mentioned ' that already thero were eight or nine remits on the subject of hospital rating for . the. next conference of. the; Counties' Association. The matter was not discussed, any further. • ■ . ■..■.'.-.'.. -
