SECONDARY SCHOOLS
VARIOUS REMITS PASSED
The Secondary Schools Principals' Association passed the following remits at its conference:—(l)' That it is advisable to havo one set, of regulations for the administration of post-primary school^; (2) that the Department be urged to institute a school-leaving certificate examination this year; (3) that the present system of allotting capitation for incidental expenses be revised; (4) that there should be a revision of the system of awarding University En: trance scholarships with a view to (a) allowing more specialisation, (b) lessening the physical strain of candidates. It was decided to send a letter to Mr. C.H. Broad,, principal of Nelson College, .giving, him the association's best wishes on his /retirement and expressing appreciation of his services in the cause of education in New Zealand. ."Mr.- T. B. Strong, the retiring Director of Education, was wished a long and happy retirement, and his successor, Mr. N. T. Larabournc, was wished a satisfactory and useful tenure of office. '.-... . ; . ■ > The combined meeting of Secondary School Principals and Assistants carried remits urging the co-ordination of all branches of post-primary education and-the treating by the Department of the matter, of a leaving Certificate as one of urgency. A remit was also carried suggesting, that the syllabus for French and .German for the Entrance Examination be amended lo as to give a comprehensive view of thr. French or Germans as. a nation and of tho factors which have moulded them. • .;■ A discussion on the teaching of science in secondary schools was inaugurated by Mr. J. S. Lorn.as, who made a plea for more time to be devoted to this subject and for an alteration in the manner of approach. Other subjects for discussion set down on the order paper were:—Juvenile Unemployment (Mr. ■W. A. Armour); Intermediate Schools (Mr. F. Milncr); Organisation of Post-Primary Education (Miss Johnston); Proposed Board of- Education (Mr. H. P. Kidson); Control, of Education and Education in General (Messrs. G< J. McNaught, AY. M. Stewart, and P. Martin Smith); Carnegie Corporation's Proposal for Educational Research (Mr. F. Milnev); and Registration of School Badges and Colours (Mr. W. M. Stewart).
