PETONE V. MARIST

At the Petone Pvecreation Ground the fixture between Petone and Marist created considerable interest.' Teams:— Petone: McVean; Boe, Hauios; McAuslan, Campbell, Cameron; Dunlop, Watson, Leslie, Woods, Craig. Marist: Turkington; Vaney, Laraey; Hindle, Bird,. Duffy;-Barton, Condon, K. I Kershaw, J. 'Kershaw, Marshment. Referee: Mr. J. Graham. The flick of the coin favoured Petone, but Marist were firs* dangerous, E. Kershaw and Marshment having likely tries. i A quick thrust by Leslie and a shot by Dunlop raised Petone's hopes, but Turkington was on the spot, and later dealt, safely with,,a long, high shot from Craig. Marist's x chances looked rosy when Bird ! slipped ahead to Condon, but Haines saved the" situation. Woods originated a bright forward movement, and Laraey shone up in the visiting defence. After Craig had flashed a' trimmer past the wrong side of the post, Woods banged over from close, quarters. At the other end, J. Kershaw worked right in, but McVean smothered a scoring chance. After a great. Marist forward run, E. Kershaw netted from a Barton centre, but offside ruled out this counter. Campbell was in .great form, and'sent his left wing moving sweetly, Laraey coming across to stem the rush. After Leslie had nodded, a fast ball ; just past, the Marist right broke away through Condon, but Campbell again retrieved the situation. Following a long punt from Cameron, Woods drove point blank for goal, where Turkington saved cleverly. McVean acted, in similar fashion seconds later when J. Kershaw accepted a slip forward from Duffy. Running out to-clear, JfcVean kicked well over half-^ay, where Leslie fastened on, I and though harassed: all the way, held on to open the scoring in typical fashion. I Petone 1, Marißt 0. Under further Petone pressure, Turkington distinguished himself in , dealing with an awkward bouncing ball from Watson, and a nasty hook shot i from Campbell. Just on lemon time, Marist forwards swept upfield in grand 'style, only pood goal-keeping by McVean preventing Barton and Condon from levelling the scores with praiseworthy efforts. At half-time the scores remained Petone 1, Marist 0. . On resuming, a fruitless corner ieli to each side, then Laraey.placed a long free kick iv McVean's safe hands. In a Petone raid, Woods placed his side further ahead. Petone 2, Marist 0. At this stage Laraey was injured and carried off, but later resumed at centrerhalf, Bird occupying the rear berth. Leslie was driving lor goal at all angles, and snatched the third goal' with a slick header from a corner kick. Marist now set up a sustained attack, and, under pressure, Boe conceded ,i penalty,'from which J. Kershaw had no difficulty in opening the visitors' account. Petone 3, Marist 1. Heartened by. this success, the "Greens" rose to something like their real form, only the sure kicking of Haines and the anticipation of McVeM holding the score in cheek. The Brothers Kershaw and Marshment were well on the mark, and a long range from Laraey sailed narrowly past. The home custodian earned applause for a great save from J. Kershaw;-white Campbell proved a tower of strength in defence; Just on time, Marist had,the ball flying into an untenanted goal, but a head bobbed up miraculously to relieve the anxiety. & hard, fast, and exciting game ended seconds later, with the scorcjs: Petone 3, , Marist I.' •■■.■■>'■-'■ ,
