NOTABLE CONCERT
MUSIC IN MASTERTON
'< The assembly hall of Solway College, Mastcrton, was arranged as a drawing room and beautifully decorated with" autumn tinted foliage and flowers on the occasion of the second concert given by the Mastcrton branch of the British Music Society. Huge log fires created a very: homely setting. Mr. Jordan (chairman), together with lira. Jordan, welcomed tho guests, who consisted of members, their friends, and the girls and staff of the college. The programme, presented by Miss Valeric Corliss and her party, was unorthodox, and contained many new things which were, refreshing to hear. Music and renderings were excellent to the final, and tho audience showed its appreciation, each performer receiving a pretty bouquet. Miss Corliss gave an interesting and instructive talk on "Modern Russian Music." Mr. W. H. Page (chairman of the New Zealand Council).- gave a short talk on' the "Future, of the British Music Society and its Influence in our Musical Lives." He said tho British Music Society was .tho finest musical organisation in existence. It had- endless possibilities .from tho musical standpoint, and also from that, of moral and spiritual development. Tho movement had ■ spread ■ considerably. Besides tho branches in, Wellington, Mastcrton, Fcilding, and Marton, another had lately been started in Dunedin. The next, would be in Havclock North, and in the near future branches would bo established in Christchurch and at Auckland. His message to Masterton members was to adhere to and uphold the ideals of tho British Music Society. Members must be ready to welcome every lover of music, avoiding any suggestion of partisanship, and creating a feeling of musical fellowship in the community. At the conclusion of the programme, all present were entertained at supper by Mrs. M. B. Thompson (principal of tho college), bringing a memorable evening to a. close. Mr. Jordan warmly thankee! the performers for their concert, and Mrs. Thompson and her school for tho use of the hall. A vote of thanks to Mrs. Thompson was also passed.
