THE LEGION'S AIMS

(To tht Editor.)

Sir,—Mr. Brindle's letter In your issue of April 29 raises one or two points' upon which it seems desirable to comment. He says that the question .whether our Parliamentary system is 'a good one or a bad one is a matter for consideration. The attitude of the New Zealand Legion in regard to that is that if the system prevent* men of all parties coming together and planning together for the common good, it is not in the general interest. Experience has shown that it docs so prevent them. ' ' It is a matter of history that the three parties in the House could not find a common basis on which to co-operate in the national criiis. The Legion does not wish to discuss the reasons for this. It would like to draw attention, however, to the fact that there was a lack of unanimity in thought and action in Parliament at a time when a iwious crisis called for the abandonment of sectional aims and sectional consciousness. It is the principal- aim of the Legion to get the people of this country to realise that it is only by subordinating sectional aims and sectional consciousness that the evils arising from the present Parliamentary system can be successfully dealt with. Mr. Brindle says, that the aim of his party is-to create gradually a new economic order. We have no quarrel with that aim. What we do take exception to is that it wishes to achieve its object in its own way. The other parties opposed to it also insist on going their own way in pursuit of their objectives. The Legion is strongly of opinion that. in - thitf clash of interests satisfactory progress will be impossible. \lf realises that'reforms of! the Parliamentary system must come from without' through the will of the' people and a demand from the people that all sectional jealousies -and strite should be ended and the best elements, of the community representing all parties brought together in combined action, for the common good.—l .am, etc., - , - • .
