In lovely wcathor the first rounds of the provincial ladies' golf championship and the Herotaunga trophy were played today. Tho warmth and sunshine made conditions delightful, although tho courso was a triflo heavy. Mis>s Culling, who withdrew from tho major ovcuts owing to a bad cold through yesterday's experiences, played this afternoon in competitions. TJio.ev^nt of tho/'morn ing was a sensational round played by Miss Barns-Graham (Gisborne) against Mrs. Peacock (Wellington). Tho brilliant young Povorty Bay golfer went out in 464445561, 42, and was 4,upattho turn. Thrills came in tho return .journey. She cainc back in 4455331547, 08. Getting into a bunker was the causo of tho 7. Without this piece of bad luck she would havo been the first to break 80 during the tourney. Miss Rutherford (Christchurch) was out in 41, and was 6 up at the turn on Mrs. Stout (Wellington). Mi's. Stout did not display oven a shadow of the stylo which has won her so many events, and was plainly overtired. Mrs. J". Wilson (Auck* land) was leading Mrs. Welton-Hogg at tho turn, but was iuncertain on tho, greens coming back, and won her match only on tho last green. ; The following are tho results:— PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP.
