THE PEW ADDRESSES THE PULPIT

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I think it would be interesting and instructive if tho^e who listen-in to the daily devotional services given from the various broadcasting stations, would sometimes express their views on the subject. I have ceased .to listen-in to them because I found a critical rather than a ■worshipful frame of mind was engendered. This was partly diie: to the daily change of minister. But one day the speaker not only read a chapter of the Bible, but also expounded it, and at once the atmosphere changed—it became alive.. This set me'-thinking. On the rare occasions when I have heard the Scriptures expounded I hava enjoyed it intensely. I think the reason m&y be that a preacher reaches only those hearers whose mind and experience are similar to his own, and it is a great joy to the person in the pew to hear his owii < iU'Mggling thought put into words. But ft that embryonic thought had not been there, though the preacher spoke with the tongue of an angel, there would be but little response on the .part of the hearer. Hence my plea that the Scriptures, written for all men for all time, be once more expounded—over the

air and in the pulpit—and let the Bible return to its central and rightful place. We ignorant but inquiring laymen do not know where to search when desiring information, and even if we did know, the books are not easily obtainable, and are usually expensive. So we look to our experts to help us in this the most important study of all. Theirs is tha opportunity and therefore the responsibility.—l am, etc., A PERSON. IN THE PEW.
