RUSSIAN-NEW ZEALAND TRADE

(To the Edltor.y Sir, —Readers are indebted to "The Post" for the informative matter published in your columns. It is evident from the figures supplied that our people are getting tired of what amounts to onesided business with the Bolshevik State wholly to the advantage of Russia; mnce our imports have dropped from £43,059 in 1928 to £8838 in 1932. As "The Post" indicates, "New Zealand exports to Russia are negligible." ; How "negligible"^ these are can be shown in stating that in the five years 1928-1932 (inclusive) we bought from Russia £107,022, and she took from us a few postal parcels,",value in. all £33. It is interesting to note that over a term of- years British trade with the Soviet Government has been largely to the advantage ol the la"tter. In the three years 1029-30-31 Britain imported from Russia £92,901,300 and exported to ' her £24,877,684. Both the Mother Country and tho Dominions have indeed been very kind to Russia and have been repaid largely with abuse and, in a measure, the creation ■of disorder within the Empire States. It is pleasing "to find that at last the British Government, and New Zealand also, have come to the conclusion that a fresh deal is.urgently called for. Readers are informed that this year New Zealand imports for three months include bulk petrol £28,100. There is no indication of the Soviet Union having bought anything from us. It is none too early for our Government to review the whole position and specially to enforce such restriction as may be necessary in the interests of our New Zealand and Empire industries. Employment of our own people should be the first consideration.—l am, etc, JUNIUS:
