EMPLOYMENT IN BRITAIN

(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, April 4. The Ministry of Labour's monthly return shows that during March there was an. increase of 103,000 in the number of persons employed and an increase of 80,544 in the number of registered unemployed. A large proportion of increased employment was in the building industry, where there were 62,000 fewer unemployed. There was also some improvement in the iron and steel trades, engineering, motor vehicle construction, shipbuild-' ing, and ship repair work, the woollen and worsted, boot and shoe, brick and pottery industries, and in the distributing trades. On the other hand, there was a decline in coalmining, in the cotton and hosiery industries, and in dock and harbour services.

The numbers of unemployed on registers on March 20 were: 2,230,211 men, 68,252 boys, 423,083 women, and 54,638 girls.
