A NEW BODY

INSURANCE. INSTITUTE

OBJECTS OUTLINED

Over a hundred people attended a jmeeting.held last night in the Accountants' Chambers for the purpose of forming a New Zealand Insurance Institute. The preliminary work of nine months bore fruit at the meeting, which enthusiastically endorsed.the proposal to form the institute. Mr. A. J. Hyder, New Zealand superintendent for the Union -Inaurance Society, presided. Mr. •C. M. Martin, ■of the A.M.P., opened the proceedings by briefly explaining the objects of the institute, which, he said, was already assured of large, support." He remarked that New Zealand was the only country without such aii institute and' nothing but good could come out of it.. The idea had originated with the. staffs rather than in managerial. .circles. The institute would embrace all branches of insurance work and would be on lines similar to the institutes in England and elsewhere. It would be of a purely educative value and would bo capable of doing much to advance the status of 1 the profession by extending a sound knowledge of insurance practice and promoting a friendly feeling amongst insurance men generally.. One of the main functions of the institute would be to prepare students for the examinations, of the Incorporated Australian Insurance Institute by lectures and debates, while a correspondence course ■would be prepared for those living away from the main centres. Affiliation ■with the -Chartered Insurance Institute of London was being arranged. Several speakers emphasised. the benefits to be derived from the formation of an institute, which, it was .pointed out, would in no way compete ■with the Fire Officers' Guild. The proposal, it was stated, had the support of the-managers of all the chief offices. Amongst those who spoke in favour of the formation of the institute were Mr. R. H. Rowland, manager of the Phoenix Insurance Company, and Mr. L. Monkman, -manager of the Yorkshire Insurance Company, both of whom spoko of the English institute from personal knowledge. „ j The motion proposing that, the institute be formed was carried unanimously. This prompted the chairman to remark that it was an auspicious beginning, and' he would impress upon those who joined up to give lasting support, and not" to drop membership after a year or So. ,- The draft rules were then considered and adopted. These, in addition to machinery clauses,, provide for the establishment of elubrooms, provident or other benefit funds, and for the formation of local centres provided that adequate membership.is available. Any member of the staff of-an .insurance office transacting business in Kew Zealand will be eligible for membership, as well as such other persons connected with the insurance or actuarial profession as may be, determined. The majority of- those" present at the meeting signed enrolment forms and will' be admitted as foundation members. ■ > The following officers were elected: — President, Mr. H* P. Hopkins (Royal); vice-president, Mr. C. M. .Martin (A.M.P.); committee, Messrs. L. Monkman (Yorkshire), W. E. Arnold (Government Life), R. H. Rowland (Phoenix), J. INT. Edgar (National Fire), R, C.
