PETONE FIRE BRIGADE

Information of the activities of the Petone Fire Brigade during the past year was contained in the twenty-fifth- annual report,' submitted by the Superintendent (Mr. J. P. Gaynor) at the annual meeting of the Petone Fire Board yesterday. The number of calls to fire and supposed fires was 11. Three were fake alarms, two were from unknown causes, and a backfire, and others were due to sparks* from a firebox, leaking petrol, a faulty chimney, a cigarette butt, and children playing with matches. The loss and saving of property for the year was indicated by the following figures:—Estimated loss of property n'otj covered by insurance: Contents £20, buildings £5. Estimated loss of• property covered by insurance: Contents nil, buildings £200. Insurance on property oil which fires occurred: Contents £5750, buildings £4475. Estimated value of property on which fires occurred: Contents £8100, buildings £6670. There has been a total saving of property for the year to the value of £14,545. A new motor engine was placed in commission, replacing the old , engine, which has now been dismantled. The new engine was reported to'be giving every satisfaction. The other engine was also stated to be in first-class order. During the year the water reticulation of Korokoro was completed, and a substation was opened there,. The Gaynor Cup, competed for by the Korokoro firemen, wae won by Fireman L. Packwood. During the year the brigade was again successful in ■winning the Licensed Victuallers' Challenge Shield, the Baldwin Memorial Shield, the Fraser' Clock, the Stevenson Cup, the Nasli Cup, and the Jenness Rose Bowl. The Phare Cup comr peted for by the brigade members was won by Fireman 0. Silbery. Fireman AY; Kennedy, who is a member of the Petone Rowing Club, was successful in winning the. senior sculls at the Wellington Rowing Regatta, and Fireman Home was successful in the junior double sculls at the New Zealand championship held at Wanganui.
