HUTT RIVER SHINGLE

QUESTION OF REMOVAL

A stone-quarrying firm applied to the Hutt River Board at last night's meeting for a licence t.o remove shingle from tile river just above the railway bridge. Mr. W. T. Strand questioned the wisdom of the policy of encouraging other firms to commence operations when so many plants already licensed were idle. The chairman (Mr. F. J. Jones) concurred, saying that over-capitalisation had been one of the evils of the Dominion. Mr. J. Mitchell said the shingle needed to be removed, and "the board required revenue. The opportunity should not be neglected. Mr. M. J. Hodgins considered it was a question of the survival of the fittest. j The question was referred to the Works [ Committee to furnish a report. A carrying firm was given permission tt remove shingle from the western reclamation area from below high-water mark at a royalty of Is per yard, the per-, mit to be a weekly one.
