AS CENTRAL RESERVE'
EXTENSION OF POWERS
CANBERRA, March 31. The Attornay-General, the Hon. J. G. Latham, announced in the House of Representatives that the Government is considering providing the Commonwealth Bank with complete powers of a central reserve bank, also the separation of the bank's central reserve and trading functions. Replying to the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. J. Hi Seullin), who- urged tho appointment of a Royal Commission on Banking and Currency, and giving the Commonwealth Bank complete con- j trol of banking, Mr. Latham said the Government was unwilling to do • this, j as any action which would arouse apprehension at present would be illtimed. He added that, the natioualisa- j tion of credit might very easily mean the destruction of credit.
