HERE AND THERE

Garden Party at Ng'aio,

Mr. and Mrs. G. Macavthur recently entertained the. officers and members of the Ngaio Croquet Club and a number_ of friends at a garden party at their home in Ngaio. There were croquet competitions and games, and tea was served on the lawn. The -weathei; was fine and the day -proved a very enjoyable one.

Their Excellencies at Lake Wanaka,

Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Bledisloe, accompanied by Lieutenant Rodney Thomson, R.N., paid a three days' visit during'the weekend to the charming holiday resort of Lake Wanaka. While there, their Excellencies were able to enjoy some trout fishing on the lako and do some red deer shooting' on the hills close to the township. Visits were made to the fruit farm of Mr. P. R. Sargood, where their Excellencies wero impressed with ,the modern methods used for the cultivation of the fruit, and the cattle and sheep station of Mr. D. Aubrey, at Cattle Plat, where the large herd of Hereford cattle on the rolling downs provided a very fine spectacle. The drive to Cattle Flat station proved.particularly interesting to the viceregal party, as the road passes such spots at Gleiidhu Bay, the bush-clad bluffs of the snowfed Motatapu River, at which numbers of men are goldmining, the twin falls, and various other scenic attractions typical of the. country. Their Excellencies were favoured with a continuation of good weather during the whole of their stay in Wanaka.

Enjoyable Party.

A most enjoyable evening was spent recently at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Colin Webster, when there were about thirty guests. The party was'iu honour of Miss Mabel Webster, who received some very useful presents. Dancing- and games occupied the evening, and the home-made supper ineluded a cake presented by Mr. and Mrs. Fyfe, which was much admired.

Danca on s.s. Marama,

Plans for the. opening danco to be held hy the newly-formed "Younger Sot" Club are being entered into with enthusiasm, and the danee, which, by courtesy of the Union Company, will be held on the s.s. Marama on Thursday, March 30, promises to be an unusually delightful function. Several novelty items and specialty dances have been included in -the programme, and there will be bridge for those to whom dancing on deck does not appeal. Tickets aro obtainable from the secretary of the English-speaking Union (Mrs. Rupert Knowlcs), and from members of the "Younger Set" Committee.

Visiting Cricketers.

Several members of the visiting M.C.C. Cricket Team- were guests of honour at a "special" night at the Mayfair Cabaret last evening, when special novelty items by the orchestra and a tap dance by the Mayfair Ballet were included in the evening's attractions. The lighting effects were very attractive, and the usual cabaret decorations were supplemented by large hcwls of greenery and flowers. Messrs. Jardine, Sufcliffe, and F. Brown, of the M.C.C. team, were present, and also Mrs. En dell Wanklyn (Christehurch), Misses V. Hutchison, H. "Whyte, M. Morice, E. Miller, V. Kelly, M. Hunter, Messrs. A. Donnelly (Christehurch), C. E. Malfroy, and J. White.
