AUSTRALIAN SWIMMERS

GISBORNE, This Day. 'At a ' carnival last night the visiting team of four Australian swimmers left no doubt about their capabilities. In the 150 yards handicap .Vv Besomo conceded as much as Msec, but-had no difficulty in winning by five yards. ■ Tho time for the • distance would, have been considerably faster had he been extended. In.the 50 yards' handicap •C. Phillips swam a fast race, winning in 25 l-ssee. This event was won 'only over the last few yards, which Phillips covered with a creat burst of speed, gaining first place by a touch.'v , '
Another fast race-was the' 100 yards handicap; won by Owen Griffiths in 59 l-ssec, after conceding N. Maddox ssec. Griffiths fought out a. close finish with the Gisborne swimmer, and won by a touch. *
P. Griffiths put up a good performance in the other 50 yards event, and although registering a slower time than Phillips for the same distance, was not extended over the last 15 yards, winning by three yards. -
