TOWN BELT "GRANDSTAND"
Application was made, to the City Council recently^ by ,the Winter Show Association for permission to lease an additional area of the Town Belt overlooking the association's sports ground, the reason for the request being that this high ground is used very freely by the- public as ;a free grandstand, with unfortunate result's to the association's, finances.
The Mayor, Councillor T. C. A. Hislop, ■ stated at last night's meeting of the council that the City Solicitor had advised that the association could be granted a lease provided only that-it paid the full rental, which would amount to £38 10s per annum and paid for work required in. fencing, deviating existing tracks, etc.
Councillor E. Semple, M.P., said that already the Show Association.had done well in securing a considerable area of Town Belt, and no further area should be made available.
Councillor J. N. Wallace moved that the proposal should be given further consideration to see whether an arrangement could not be made whereby the council could exclude the public from the particular area on certain days.
Councillor J. Burns said that the association knew what it was doing when it built the ground and should not now ask for any further area. ' -
The association's application was refused.
