SAILOR'S'PROMPT ACTION

PRAISED BY CORONER

The action of a fireman of the steamer Ard.en.vohr in diving from the vessel when she was berthed at Taranaki Street "Wharf to tho rescue of an apparently drowning woman was praised by the Coroner (Mr. E. Gilbcrtson, J.P.) at an inquest today into the death" of Janet Moss, aged 23, whoso body was found floating in the harbour on Monday.

Evidence disclosed at the inquest showed that the deceased had been at Oriental Bay on Sunday in company with a young man. She left him as they were walking home, and was-not seen again until' her body was found floating near, the Taranaki Street Wharf. W. J. Jones, a fireman on tho Ardchvohr, when he saw the body in the water, immediately dived overboard and brought the girl to the wharf landing, a distance of about 100 yards. Members of the crew tried artificial respiration for sonic time, but without success. The medical evidence was to tho offeet that death was due to drowning. There were no marks of .violence on the body.

Senior-Sergeant D. Calwcll, who conducted the inquest, said that the- action of the fireman in jumping so promptly off the ship from such a height was very commendable.

After returning a finding that the deceased had drowned herself while in a state of acute nervous disturbance, the' Coroner said that he highly commended the action of the fireman in attempting to rescue what he imagined to be a drowning woman.
