INDECENCY CHARGES
NEW TRIAL SOUGHT
Under section 446 of the Crimes Act, 1908, an application for an order directing a new trial of "Walter Anderson Clifton, an engineer, on two charges of indecent assault at Wellington, came before the Court of Appeal this afternoon. Mi-. J. Meltzer, with Mr. R. Clarke appeared for Clifton, and the SolicitorGeneral (Mr. A. Fair, ■ K.C.) for the Crown.
The indictment was first heard in the Supreme Court -at Wellington on August 11 and 12 last year, when the jury disagreed. .At the second trial the jury returned a verdict of guilty with a recommendation to leniency. Leave was then granted to Mr. Meltzcr by the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) to apply to the Court of Appeal for a new trial. Clifton was admitted to bail in the meantime.
