A .suggestion that county',councils might buy surplus foodstuffs from farmers for forwarding to the city for distribution as relief was made by A ' prominent social' worker at a 1 confer- ' ence of local. bodies. ■ . 1 'Eeferring to a proposal, that; the ' local bodies should combine "in their ' . relief efforts, the speaker said that while farmers might have a surplus of ■/ foodstuffs they:could not afford'to give it away. If .that produce wer.e bought i by the county councils it -would help both the farmer and deserving families ! whose breadwinners were out of. work.
