FROM GOOD FAMILY.

PROSPECTS OF MOBILE

In the past it has been by no means unusual for horses to come up from the tar south to Trentham and to catch northern racegoers oft' the alert. Very often the handicappcr, too, without a good line ou which to go, lias assisted such horses to victory by an excusable underestimation of their ability. A horse from such parts who will be making his first appearance outside of Otago this week is Mobile, but' it would not look as if any particular risk has been taken in weighting him at 5.12 in the Tinakori Handicap. Mobile is a three-year-old brown gelding by Tractor from Uroski's Sunny Lake daughter, Bonnie Lake, and he has already built up a fairly attractive record for himself. In one start as a two-year-old he ran second to Wealth in the D.J.C. McLean Stakes, beaten only by a neck, then he was rested for nearly a year. He reappeared this season, again at the D.J.C. Spring Meeting, running unplaced in the Trial Stakes won by Palantua; but almost immediately afterwards he ran second to Red Sunset on the first day at Gore and won from Amelita and Broughshane on the second day. At the Dun--edin Summer Meeting he was again successful in the Farewell Handicap, was twice placed at Waikouaiti, and won at Oamaru. In one start since he won the Berwick Handicap from Zeebrugge (who was, however, unlucky) and Kamal Pasha at Dunedin last month. All these races were at. distances of sis furlongs or under. ' -His record of four wins and four plaeings in. ten starts to date is undoubtedly attractive. Moreover, he is a /yell-bred sort belonging to one of the best branches (Watersprite) of the Mermaid family. His maternal grandam, Droski, was a half-sister by Stepniak to the New, Zealand Cup winner, Grand Rapids, also to Neva, the dam of the late Mr. G. D. Greenwood's first Derby winner, Danube. Droski is owned ■by Mr. L. C. Hazlett, to whom she gave those fine jumpers, Londonderry and Galway, as well as Lomagundi, Ravenna, and Overdrawn. Bonnie Lake, who came between .Ravenna and Overdrawn, was obtained by Mr. R. ■ McDonald as a yearling, and she.won several races for him in the south, though she never achieved anything above hack^suo cesses. After her • fifth year she was retired, and Mobile is one. of the -first of her progeny, to be raced. Mobile has done all his racing fn. the colours of Mr. D. J. McDonald, for whom he is trained at Wingatui by H. A. McDonald. It is quite evident he has the makings of a useful performer in him, and he will bear close watching in races he contests this week. ,
