SPORTS TOURNAMENT
The athletic section of the Public Service inter-departmental sports tournament is to be held on the Basin Eeserve on Friday afternoon. In 1911 the late Sir Joseph Ward presented a trophy (known as the Ward Challenge Trophy), to be held by the Department in Wellington gaining the highest aggregate of points at the tournament each. year. The trophy was competed for in 1911, 1912, and 1913, but owing to the intervention of the war no further tournament was held until 1924, and until this, year no meeting had.been held since. This summer the tournament was revived, and already swimming and tennis competitions have been held. The athletic events .on ■ Friday. afternoon will complete the series of contests comprising the tournament:
A- long and varied programme has been, arranged, and, among competitors will be a number of athletes who are well known in Wellington. Exceptionally large entries have been, received, there being, for instance, a hundred for the 100 yards championship, which, if all start, will necessitate ten heats. There should be some rkeen contests, and, as the net proceeds of the meeting are to be given to the Mayor's Distress Fund, a good response "from the public is expected.
To date the Post and Telegraph. -Department has won the Ward Challenge Trophy each time,it has been, competed for, and this time it has a leaa so far of three points from the Government In-surance-Valuation Departments. Points gained by the various Departments in the tennis and swimming contests are as follows:—Post and Telegraph 24, Government Insurance-Valuation Departments 21, Public Trust '18, MarineCustoms 14, Census-Stamps-Industries and Commerce-Unemployment Board 15, Railways 10; Lands1 and Survey 6, Audit 5, Agriculture 5, Public Service Commissioner's Office-State Fire-Patents Of-fice-Internal Affairs 5, Education 5, Printing 3, National Provident-Super-annSation 2, Pensions 1.
