Charles Laughton plays the part of Charles Sturm, a submarine commander stationed at a base on tho north coast of Africa.- Ho is-insanely jealous of his wife, whom ho alleges has been carryIng on. with Ills first lieutenant, and acting on his suspicions he has the young officer transferred. Pauline meets the new first lieutenant under unusual circumstances, and falls in lovo with him. The commander's suspicions, however, are once more aroused, and he conceives the terrible revenge which sends the submarine to its doom. Ho sets out for the submarine to see his first lieutenant, but Paulino gets there first and warns tho man she is in love with. Then follows one of the most exciting and dramatic episodes seen on the screen. Tha commander makes it appear that the lieutenant is to blame for the collision that sinks the submarine, but the picture ends with the commander caught in his own trap, the escape of tho others aboard, and the fulfilment of a romance.
