Kilbirnie in the maiu were responsible for the bright batting. Playing against Petone on No. 1 wicket at the Basin Reserve they made a careful start, and then set out ou a hard hitting. campaign in which Bilby and Kershaw were the leading lights. So severely was the bowling trounced that in one period of three-quarters of ah hour over 100 runs were scored, and in little more than ah hour and a half 250 runs were registered. Bilby hit up 115 in great style, and Kershaw compiled a vigorous 71. Prior to this Wrigley, a promoted junior, contributed a'sound and valuable 65. The Petone bowling was not up to full strength, but, even so, Kilbirnie's performance was highly meriterious, the innings realising 373 runs. On the other wicket at the Basin Reserve Wellington made matters interesting against Institute in putting the opposition in and then going for a lead on the first innings before the day's play ended. In this, Wellington succeeded, and .will endeavour, no doubt, to repeat the performance nest Saturday, the 'object of course being an outright win. University, very ably helped by a fine forcing innings by Tricklebank, made a fair showing against Midland at Kilbirnie, but Midland's reply so far as it went had University, in difficulties." O'Neill gained a good bag of wickets for Midland. Hutt again failed with the bat, this time against Wellington College Old: Boys, for whom Parsloe and Duncan bowled with much success. AVhen the .day's play ended Old Boys were in front .on the first innings. The following is the result of the afternoon's play:'r4- • Kilbirnie 373 -v. Petone 7 for no wic7 kets. '. Institute 122 v. Wellington 125 for r,i_ wicket.. University 228 v! Midland 81 for no wickets. Hutt 107 v. Wellington College Old Boys 130 for sis wickets. An Outstanding batting performance in the junior grades was that of Nelson ,(Wellington College) in ' making 222 of the 404 runs scored during the afternoon. Wellington College Old Boys in the second, grade also topped the 400 mark.
