CROQUET CONFERENCE
The adjourned meeting of the New Zealand Groquet Council was continued last evening, Mrs. Rhodes-Williams ■ occupying the chair. ' ' It was decided to appeal to the associations to hold their annual meetings earlier in order that reports could be; incorporated in the council's' annual returns. . . .■•'. f: ■ , . On the motion of Mrs. Austin, seconded by Mrs. Keesing, it was resolved that the three open championships—Dominion, North, and South—should be each decided under the same conditions. . The annual report was adopted. The balance-sheet presented was passed, the secretary being instructed to inquire into certain items which were not made clear. ; The hon. secretary, Mr. A. G.F. Ross, submitted proposals for the appointment of an organising secretary who should be editor of a bi-monthly croquet publication to take the place of the "Croquet Annual." The appointment would be financed by a levy of 2s, 6d per annum per member, the levy to coyer the cost of the publication* to members/ Mr. Ross pointed out that the secretarial work was now so heavy that the honorary secretary had to devote five hours a day to the work, and that the compilation of the "Annual" was additional to this.' The proposal was strongly opposed by Mrs. McLennan (South Canterbury), Mrs. Austin (Wellington), Mrs. Keesing (Auckland), Mr. Managh (West Coast), and others, principally on the ground that the time was not opportune for increasing the levy upon members. In view o£ the opposition, no further action was taken, but, on the motion of Mrs. Austin, it was decided to appeal to all members for a voluntary contribution of, say, 6d or Is each. ; The meeting adjourned till 7.30 p.m. this evening. : :
