SALVATION ARMY

NEW ZEALAND FOUNDATION

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

The jubiiee of the. Salvation Army in New Zealand is to be commemorated this year. Fifty years ago on Ist April, 1883, the work of the Army was commenced in Dunedin, and, in spite of adverse criticism, considerable opposition, and somo persecution, the pioneer officer succeeded in establishing sixteen posts or corps throughout the Dominion in- the first year of operations. In course of time opposition wore down and the tide of public approval of the Army set in as it "was recognised that the organisation was doing work of great benefit to the community.

The number of corps increased yearly, until at the present time the Army may be founc! in almost every centre of importance throughout the land. At 109 corps and 284 outposts the aggressive evangelistic work of the Army is being carried on. There has also been established a network, of social institutions for men, women, and children at which invaluable work for young and old is being done.

The Army recognises the fact that the best way in which its jubilee can be commemorated is to continue the gooa work in which it is engaged, and throughout the year this will be earned on in a spirit of "jubilee intensity. "

The first effort which will engage the attention of Salvationists will be a "Save the Child" Campaign during February. The object of this campaign is to strenuously combat forces which undermine religion in the home and lower the ideals of the young. Efforts will be made therefore at every centre to increase the attendance of children at the Army's Young People's meetings and swell the ranks of the Junior Soldiers, Corps Cadets, and Life Savine Scouts and Guards. '

Following this campaign four great Jubilee congresses will be held in the four principal cities of the Dominion These will be conducted by Commissioner Cunningham, assisted by National Headquarters' Staff. The dates of the various congresses are as follows: Christchurch, 25th to, 27th''1 March. Dunedin, 28th March to 2nd April Auckland, 6th to~ 11th April Wellington, 27th April to 2nd May
