AN AUCKLAND ARTIST
Mr. AValter Wright,, the gifted artist who devoted his' skill so happily to reproducing New Zealand life and scenes, died on Wednesday at the age of 67 states the "New Zealand Herald" With his elder brother, Mr. JTrahk Wright, who predeceased him by nearly ten years, he did much to record, and to interpret-for all to understand the peculiar charm and beauty of his adopted, land. Mr. Wright was born in Nottinghamshire in 1866, arid reached New Zealand -with his parents when he was 11 years of age.-He first exhibited with the Auckland Society'of Arts.in, 1888, and thereafter was'a consistent exhibitor for many years. As a member of the committee and in other capacities he gave valuable years of service to the society. Both, of the Wright brothers belonged to the older school of landscape painters. As young men they studied in England, and there came under the influenco of the Newlyn School. Frank Wright confined himself to water colours, but . Walter Wright used both water colours' and oils. On their return to New Zealand, in the course of much travelling, they made themselves intimately acquainted with much of the country's most beautiful scenery. Mr. Wright laboured as a teacher of painting until failing health recently compelled him to lay this work aside. Mr. Wright leaves a widow. There are no children.
