MR. GEORGE FRASER

The death occurred.at Northeote yesterday morning, at the age of 77. years, of' Mr. Georgo Fraser, a former Mayor of that borough, and -well, known in: business 'circles throughout- the Auckland province (states the "Auckland Star"). He was born at .Matakana, and was the eldest son of the late Mr. Georgo Fraser, who. in, .1862. started the engineering business .. in . .Mechanics' Bay which two years later became the firm of Fraser and Tinne, and after Mr. Tinno 's retirement in 1881 that of Georgft Fraser and Son, Ltd. Mr. Fraser was educated at the Auckland High School, before it became the Auckland Grammar School.; He commenced his career as ■ apprentice to Fraser and Tinno at Auckland in 1871, but in 1879 was' appointed draughtsman and later departmental manager of the outdoor and naval repairs at Mort's engineering works at Sydney. He rejoined the firm of Fraser and Tinne as manager at Auckland ia 1880, and in 1900 was appointed managing director of George.Fraser and.Sons, Ltd. During the mining boom of 1895 and 1596 Mr. Fraser was closely identified with the Ohinemuri field as engineer to the Waitekauri . Gold Mining Company. After the death -of his father in. 1901 he continued the active conduct of the Stanley street works. He helrt the office of president of the Auckland Ironmasters' Association for 22 years, Tetiring in 1931, ana also held office in the Engineers' Association of New South Wales. On the constitution of Northcote as a borough in 1908 he was elected a member of the first council, and served as Mayor from 1912 to 1917.
