CANADIAN GRAIN

TRANSHIPPED ACROSS U.S.A. AMERICAN EXPORTERSMOVE WASHINGTON, 11th January. A move by United States grain exporters to have the State Department formally protest against the recent refusal by.the United Kingdom to grant the preferential rate on Canadian grain .transhipped across the United States ■was crystallised to-day with a conference between, the Assistant Secretary of State, Mr. Rogers, and representatives of North Atlantic grain-export-ing agencies and officials of State municipal agencies. It was contended that the new regulation would have the effect of diverting grain now shipped by American carriers through American elevators to the Canadian seaports Montreal, Halifax, and St. John. The United Kingdom ruling arose out of the recent Ottawa' Conference. Canadian grain, to get the preferential tariff rate, must be shipped through Canadian ports. The Department made it clear that it is reserving the right to protest against this and possibly other developments of the Ottawa Conference.
