RIVER BOARD ELECTION

THE OFFICIAL COUNT

The official count of votes in the Hutt Eiver Board election was completed this morning by the returning officer, Alt. A. J. Gearing, and resulted as follows:—J. Brassell 897, M. J. Hodgins 826, J Mit-' chell 819, W. T. Strand 815, F. J. Jones--776, W. B. Hutchison 680, V. A Noble 619, J.,E. Napier 537, F. M. Thessman 453, J. B. Hopkirk 424; informal 64. The first five were elected. Out of 475] entitled to vote only 820 did so.' The exact number of votes cast has not yet been ascertained, as some ratepayers have as many as 4 votes, according to the value of their properties. The correct way to vote was to strike out the names of the candidates for whom the1 voter did not wish to vote, and a feature of the informal voting was the placing of lines against and not through the names of candidates. As five candidates were required and five were not required, the returning officer could not say whether the lines against the names indicated those voted" for or those \-oted against.
