; The Australians to : day had their first successes, McGrath, playing with the cunning of a veteran, taking the rubber from Gledhill in' straight sets." The Vinos-Hopman contest was stirring and full of sensational incidents. HopmaiL fought gamely, but the terrific drives of the champion often left him standing. Vines apparently felt the heat, but he was seriously troubled by Hopman's consistent. volleying. ' Although Allison was dashing he and Van Eyn were convincingly rbeatcn by Moon and ,Sproule, who combined splendidly after losing the- first set. In the other doubles Gledhill was brilliant, outshining his more famous partner, Vines. McGrath was always reliable, but Hopman was less consistent than on Saturday. Following are the scores :— Singles.' "' Gledhill lost to McGrath, 2-6, 6-8. . Vines beat Hopman, 7-5, 9-11, 6-3. . Doubles. Allison and Van Eyn lost to Moon and Sproule, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 3-6. Vines and Gledhill beat Hopman ana McGrath, 9-7, 9-7, 6-3. The two unfinished doubles were abandoned owing to bad light.
