MR. PERRY FAREWELLED
Mr. J. E. F. Perry, who is retiring from-the position of deputy City Librarian this week, after over forty years of service •with, the City Council, was entertained at a social function:.,by," members of the library staff at the Eitz r on Saturday evening. Councillor "W, J.. Gaudin,,chairman of th.^ Libraries. Committee, presided. Councillor. Gaudin spoke of the long term of excellent service Mr. Perry had given, from a beginning as a boy in the old : Athenaeum. • Library on Lambtou quay to his first work under the council -when the Athenaeum -was taken over by the city. He wished Mr. Perry every happiness in his retirement.'., ■ Mr. B. Tait, deputy Town' Clerk', also spoke of early days in the city Libraries Department, and added his good wishes to those expressed by Councillor Gaudin. >
On behalf of the staff, the City Librarian, Mr. JV Norrie, presented Mr. Perry with an. easy -chair.-. Mr. Nome referred particularly to the splendid work done by Mr; Perry in the management of the primary school library, system, and in his weekly talks to students of the secondary schools. Mr. i Norrie spoke also of the particularly, happy relations which had existed between. Mr.' Perry and all members of the staff, and also of the public. Mr. Perry had the best wishes of all for his future prosperity and . happiness.^ Mr. Norrie also conveyed the best wishes of the staff to Mrs. Perry, and presented to her an evening handbag. ■In reply, Mr. Perry expressed his great appreciation of the good wishes of the staff to himself and Mrs. Perry. He had always been happy in his work, from his interest in books and his conviction of the value and importance of library'facilities to readers of all ages. If in his retirement he was aa happy as he-had been in his forty years of library work, then he would be, indeed, fortunate. • '";"'.
