NATIONAL COUNCIL

REMITS FOR CONFERENCE

There was a well attended meeting of tho Wellington branch of tho National Council of Women held at the Univorsity Women's Club last evening. Mrs. Suckling presided. ° ■

A number of remits .were brought forward and considered, all being passed to be forwarded for consideration at the next conference which will be held early in tho New Year. These included resolutions concerning the nationality of married women, better privacy in domestic courts, and one- drawing attention to the condition of women patients at the Mental. Hospital. In speaKing of the"latter, Miss England"/paid a tribute to the good work done at tho Mental Hospital in a number of directions, and said that the overcrowding was the cause of much trouble. It was hoped that a few suggested amendments might be acceptable, af tor having, been considered by the-.New Zealand conference and more information gained; Mrs. 'G:.,..Hunter gave a particularly interesting resume of the investigations made by the' Society for the .Protection of Women and Children on the subject of films and posters. She- mentioned the facts stated in the British reports that wonderfully fine and interesting films of all kinds are made which New Zealand never sees. Germany, Japan, and some of the Continental countries iiave a great number of special films made for children and young people, these being full of interest, not only from, the educational point of view, but with plenty of wholesome stories, adventures, fun "of all kinds, 'arts and crafts,- travel,; etc.,-- making- -delightful school entertainments and doing away with, the practice of sending .the .young ones to see unwholesome, productions which deal with crime or give an entirely false idea of life. Mrs. Hunter emphasised that it was for the people of this country £o show the film importers that they'wanted a decent and superior .class of film, and she was sure. thay' would be ■ provided. ': A,f ter all, what the producers had to look at was the boxroffice receipts; and if the people left alone the poor and meretricious films they would soon be abandoned and really "decent stuff" provided. . The.-remit passed for conference appreciated the fact that good travel and topical films were a-feature of the present programmes,1-but urged the production of some of the many fine films mentioned as belonging to other countries which do hot appear here. Appreciation was also expressed of the fact that another "All-British" theatre has recently been opened in Wellington. Mrs. Hunter was cordially thank-: ed for her address...-.-,'.

.A/brief discussion was held concerning the conditions'of domestic service, wages, and.hours, .of employment, and it.was left to the, executive to.formulate a remit on the subject;- • Miss Brand, of the. N.C.W. of Christchnrch, was a welcome- visitor at tho meeting. ■ ■ ■ .
