DEATH OF SHIPPING MAN

, Mr. Q. F. . Wetherlake, Brisbane branch manager of the Orient .Line, was severely injured when he fell down a hold of the Orontes,.and he died in hospital two hours later.The deceased man boarded the Orontes to inspect the hold in -which buttai was being shipped.. He. clambered ovei the combings on No. 3 hatch on "D" deck, and had a foothold on the perpendicular ladder, when, it is believed, he lost his grip on the rounded edge of the combings and, fallingl backwards, crashed 55ft. Several nieu were working at the bottom of the hold. Mr. Wetherlake was 54 years of age, ana was' born in Devonshire. lie reached Sydney with his parents at an early age, was educated at Sydney High School, and entered the service of tho Orient Line ■in 1894. After service in the accounts department, he .was transferred to the-freight department, where he' spent seyeral years, becoming second in charge, under Mr. W. C. Andrew, now Sydney manager. In 1905 he was sent to Brisbane to take charger of the shipping department of Moreheads,.Limited, then Brisbane agents for the Orient Line. In 1326 the Orient Line established its own agency, in Brisbane, and he was appointed manager. The Rev. James Butterworth, minister of Clubland Methodist Church, Walsworth London, has.received a cheque for £1000 trom a lady who wishes to remain anonvnious. The money will be spent in building a club :or young men and women
