FAEMERS' UNION

WOMEN'S BRANCHES. MEET A meeting of the finance committee of the Women's Division of the New< Zealand Farmers' Union ..-was held in the Dominion Office, Wellington, recently, Mrs. J. Pow (Dominion treasurer) being in the chair. Applications for assistance for needy cases in the country were dealt with, and £80 was paid from the Community Chest Fund for wages and travelling expanses of housekeepers. A letter of thanks was read from the secretary of Wairoa branch for the generous response from all branches. Cases of crockery, groceries, jam and preserves, and donations of money were forwarded to Waivoa, and were gratefully appreciated. In a letter received from the secretary of the Farmers' Union in the Wairor, district, mention was made that the division was the first in the field in the distribution of relief, and had once again proved itself a power for good. The Wellington branch held a most enjoyable bridge party recently in the Lyceum Club rooms, about seventy players being present, so that a very satisfactory contribution to the Community Chest Fund should be made, from the proceeds. Mrs. Goodson (vice-president) thanked all present for their help in making the function so enjoyable. The Dominion secretary (Miss C. E. Connor) visited the Hutt Valley branch for the last monthly meeting, and gave an address on the aims and objects of the organisation. Miss Connor explained the working of the Bush Nurse and Housekeeper scheme,'

the Flock House Boys' Fund, and Dominion Book Club, and offered suggestions for the programmes of branch meetings. The speaker was warmly thanked by the members, on the motion of the president, Mrs. "W. Lindsay. Miss Young then gave a demonstration of the art of re-covering umbrellas.

The Plimmerton district branch met recently. A competition for the best article made from the sugar bag brought ten entries, Miss Barclay winning the first prize. Most of the articles were subsequently sold. Mrs. Flighty continued her demonstrations on paper flower making. It was decided to hold the nest meeting at Pahautanui.
