The late Mr. Lawrence was bora at Cuddington, England,: in 1850, and waa self-educated. He commenced work on a farm at the age of eight years, and at_ sixteen went to Ixindon and learnt bricklaying, subsequently becoming: a; ~ builder's foreman. Mr. Lawrence came to New Zealand in 1873, being wrecked on the coast in the ship Surat on New Year's Day of the following year! ....'
