FAST STEAMING
MONOWAI'S PERFORMANCE
A NOTABLE VOYAGE
Since entering : the , Sydney-San Francisco mail service, the; Union Steam Ship Company's liner Monowai (formerly1 the P. and';O. Line's Bazmak) has proved her excellent steaming capabilities on more than: one occasion and has shown that she', can easily improve upon the mail service schedule even though encountering -.bad weather.- -* Her latest effort was on the run from Karo tonga to which she completed .. yesterday morning by coming 'into port, practically a. day ahead of schedule/ .The mail Steamers are due here about 7 a.m.-on Mondays, and the Monowai; arrived' at 9.50 a^nu yesterday. ~: -.. ';'/C..; '■'_'''[ ■ '
The Monowai left Earotonga at 6.50 p.m. last Monday,'and averaged 16 knotsto.Wellingtony although for two days she was battling against a full gale,; Thick misty conditions, with a cold southerly wind,-■welcomed the liner<-at Wellington, and consequently it was not until: she drew, alongside the Queen's Wharf that she was visible to those who looked for her from the hills above Wellington terrace. Itis along time since as many notabilities, arrived .at Wellington by . one ship as was the case with the Monowai. In.addition to delegates to the Ottawa Conference, the New Zealand Olympic Games team, and Arthur Mailey's Australian cricket team, there were a number of prominent personages included in the passenger- list. L As is usual aboard ship, politicians^ sportsmen, and - business ; men became one happy family andv:joined"wholeheartedly into the various ' entertainments arranged to while away, the time on the: voyage. A particularly'pleasant day was spent at Barotonga,. where loading natives entertained the Ottawa delegates and a sports programme was carried out.
