DRUNKEN DRIVER
TWO MONTHS' GAOL
NO OPTION OF FINE
A sentence of two months' imprisonment without the option of a fine was imposed by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., to-day, on Imdwig Sigurd Earsen, a seaman and labourer, aged 37, for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car in Bugby street on Saturday evening. Larsen pleaded guilty. At 6.10 p.m. on Saturday, SeniorSergeant Scott said, Cpnstable Paget saw the accused in the vicinity of a motor-car near the Caledonian Hotel. The constable saw that the acjeused' was intoxicated, and ' warned the accused that if he drove the car he would be locked up. At 6.30 p.m., \ the accused returned to the car and got in and attempted to drive away. . The constable arrested him before he could get the car moving, Larsen had no driver's licence, and the car had been hired from a city firm for a couple of hours. i , ' •
"Your record is a very bad one, and a very varied one," Mr. Woodward told the accused after studying his "list," which included offences against the Gaming Act, trespass, obscene language, assault, assaulting the.' policfe, knd failure to comply with a maintenance order.
Larsen had nothing to . say, and in addition to sending him to gaol, the Magistrate debarred him from obtaining a driver's licence for one year. He was convicted and, discharged for having no driver's licence, and on a' charge of assaulting Gordon Francis Lewis he was remanded for a week. '
