DOINGS AT AWAPUNI

HUNT CLUB CANDIDATES

GLEN ROSSIE'S RETURN

(Special from "Binocular.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day. With the Manawatu Hunt Meeting and other spring fixtures drawing nigh, trainers at A-wapuoi are speeding up the opera-1 tions of their charges. The centre has StHxld horses engaged at the local meeting. Eos^' "IS° J 7llß a sood performer for Messrs. G. E. Trevor and J. L." McUa Z C^r ple mo£ masons back, has been leased by Mr. Trevor to Wallace Young, «£ Hastmgs. The Acre gelding originally developed blood poisoning on a trip to Hiccarton, but he is stated to be quite limself again. ■ J. Manuel has Lady Court and ihe three-year-old Sir Romeo in -work, and both are looking in good order. The youngster, who has yet to race, has built Tip considerably since being added to the Beau. Gallante, who was a member of the string that G. W. New brought over from Australia in 1930, will probably have ins first race" at the Manawatu Hunt fixture. Possessing plenty of bone, he looks en ideal cut for a steeplechaser. La Moderne is still at Awapuni, and nothing definite has been announced re- ■ Jative to her future, although she has been inspected by a veterinary surgeon and contemplating buyers more than once. The filly looks a picture, and was revelling in her work on Thursday morning. M. H. Nicol has secured his trainer's licence, and he is now supervising the training operations of Advjentusl and a half-sister to the defunct Princess Betty. Adventos had to forgo his Grand National engagements, but he looks quite himself again. PROMISING YOUNGSTERS. While Awapuni has not the same number of two-year-olds in work as in former oeasons, the centre promises nevertheless to be well to the' fore in juvenile events this season. Mrs. A. McDonald, who invariably pos£esse«_one or more outstanding two-year-olds, has a strong string again, and indications are that the Australian-bred Rottwing-Linlass filly and the Lord Quex-rOddity filly will show superior early, form. J. P. Coyle has a brace of nice ones in After Money, by Paper Honey from -Afterglow, and a Marchalong colt. The former ia a racy-looking customer, whereas the latter attracts by reason of his solidity. The arrival of Luke Wilson from Hastingß has added to the ranks a particularly fine-looking two-year-old in the Chief .Ruler—Doree filly, for whom the name of Prmcess Doreen has been claimed. His other representative,.! Lord Quex—Catalini gelding, does not impress to the same extent. On the score of appearance, the halfsister to Princess Betty in M. Nicol's charge had still to prove that she is of the calibre of the chestnut whose career ■was brought to a close as the result of an accident in Australia. /■J 11 ?d£jtion to the above, Boyal Guy (Eoyal Divorce—Panette), a Lackham— Truney gelding, Hugo (Nigger MinstrelPleasure), a Hunting Bong—Bayou gelding, a Lord Quex-—Novoko gelding, and a Coloseus—Sanguinaria colt will all be found figuring in ,early spring engagements, when a more definite line will be obtained aa to their capabilities. However, it is evident that the centre should be again worthily represented.
