PRAYERS FOR SUCCESS

QUEBEC,, 18th. July. On board the Empress of Britain, radiant skies welcomed the British, South African, Indian, Northern Ireland, and Southern Rhodesian delegations to Canadian -waters to-day as the steamer passed through the Straits ,of Belle. Isle into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. She will probably dock at Quebec on Monday at 1 p.m. ' . Prayer for the success of the Imperial Conference was urged by Cardinal Verdier, /Archbishop of Paris, following Mass _on board on Sunday. He said: "The conference is restricted to the many peoples of the British. Empire; yet in material things it offers an example which might well serve as an inspiration to others." A minor blaze, Btarted.ltiya fused electric wire in a room, on the lEmpress of Britain to-night, threatened to create a flurry, which was avoided by the presence of mind of Mr.-Stanley Baldwin, president of the British. delegation to the Imperial Conference. Toward the end of the usual concert, smoke was seen curling near the stage. Mr. Baldwin, who was presiding, announced quietly,*.' '. That .. ends -the programme..' ' The crowded room emptied without dis : "order, and' the fire was Boon- extinguished. .
