Jewellery valued at £400 was stolen fromoß6billiard and Sons' shop, inEEasyt y street, last night. A constable on his round early this morning saw on the footpath the iron grille which protected the window, and found a watch, several frings, and other jewellery lying about. ,-. • - ;
, The . lock fastening ■ the grille had been forced, the grille removed; and a hole about a foot across made in the plate-glass window, through-which the thief removed an assortment of/jewellery, mainly diamond rings.
TEBRIFIC GALE
DAMAGE IN WHAKATANE

AUCKLAND, This Day,
A gale of terrific force struck Whakatane last night, doing much damage in the central portion of the town. ,A roof di.iron and timber was torn offi the Powet Board building and hurled in all directions, a portion crashing on to a boarding-house next-door. A boarder in an upstairs bedroom had a narrow
escape. Several houses occupied by Maoris were unroofed, and several chains of power lines were demolished. Whakatane was, plunged into-darkness. A considerable amount of damage was done to other parta of the town, but, fortunately, nobody was injured.
