UNEMPLOYMENT FUND
A RUMOUR DENIED
i As a result of inquiries made in offl cial quarters, to-day, it was ascertained that some concern is being felt by the Government owing-to the heavy demands which are being made upon the funds' available for the relief of unemployment. The /position appears to be that the Unemployment Board is unable to apply the. new scheme^ of relief and sustenance to the country districts owing to the heavy charge that.would be involved, andtheGovr ernment may be faced with the necessity of securing more money for unemployment purpose's. ," ■'■~- : . ■■■<':■.
Eumours have been current, that the Government intends to increase - the" wages tax, but ';" the Prime' Minister (the Right Hon.'G'. W. Forbes) stated this afternoon that Cabinet'has' not giyen any consideration to such a proposal. It. was no secret, he said/that the funds of the Unemployment Board were being strained to the utmost, but any .suggestion that an increase , in the wages tax was being "considered could1 be emphatically denied.,- "'■.--.'""
