CONTROL OF RELIEF WORKERS
The secretary of -the executive of the United Front of Unemployed and Relief Workers, in a letter to "The Post" on the formation of a new relief workers' organisation by union officials, maintains that the latest move is not so much'for the welfare of the relief workers as-the officials would have the men believe.'" He asserts that it arises from .a desire to control the relief workers', organisations and utilise the position of the unemployed for political purposes. Hence the United Front, an organisation run entirely by relief workers, not connected with any political party. The statement refers to the formation of the relief workers' section of the General Labourers' Union,1 and the decision of the Alliance of Labour to back the section. "This served the purpose of enticing.some of the relief workers tofenrol," states the secretary, "but after the clamour of high-sounding titles had died dqwn the relief workers realised the position. The United Front is always prepared to co-operate with any party, which will assist in the betterment of the conditions, for relief workers, but we are emphatic that we shall not be run* by any outside body or party." , (To the Editor.) £ir,—We wish to state that Mr, Fraser, M.P., was not an official member, of the deputation from the United Front of Unemployed Relief Workers which upon Mr. Coates on Monday. Although Mr. Fraser was present and spoke, he did so entirely on his own initiative-and at;his own invitation. Our organisation is ncmpolitical, our aim being to unite the: unemployed relief workers of all political thought into one body, to endeavour to. better our conditions.—We are, etc., ]
