NUHAKA WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Demonstrations of -decorative- cake icing by Mrs. il. H. Young and of wooltnat making from the fleece were given at the recent meeting of the Nuhaka . Women's Institute, at which Sister May presided. Mrs. Young presented the cake to the institute for a special competition, which was won by Mrs. "W. Ropitini. It was the means of raising a considerable sum. Two other competitions were held. One, the best article made from scraps, was won by Mrs. Ora Noa, with a rag mat, and Miss Monteath. was second with a patchwork dressing gown. The other was a sixpenny parcel, and was won by Mrs. Brewster. It was decided, in view of present financial depression, that the institute would not send a delegate to conference this year. On the suggestion of Mrs. Steele, it was resolved that each member or any person interested should secure a skein of New Zealand wool (three-ply) and knit a square by casting on fifty stitches ou number nine needles. The squares when finished are to be handed in to the secretary, and later- sewn togother to make a quilt to bo sold for the benefit of the institute. A request was received from the local relief workers that a member of the institute be appointed to assist with the distribution of relief. Sister May and Mrs. T. Eunga were appointed. Mrs. A. N. S. Moore was enrolled a new member. The hostesses were Mesclames Arthur, Brewster, and Black. A special meeting was held recently to prepare garments, the Maori members being well represented. Useful work was accomplished, and a large amount of clothing: was collected, and will be distributed later to needy cases.

Obituary.

Having survived her husband, the lalo Rev. John Dawson, for nearly seven years, Mrs. Annie Dawsun passed away yesterday afternoon. Although not widely-known, Mrs. Dawson was much loved and respected by all who knew her. She was of a retiring but kindly disposition, and many friends will sorrow at her passing and will sympathise with her daughters, Emily and Gladys (Mrs. McAlister), and her son, Mr. Ernest Dawson. Golden Wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hatfield celebrated their golden wedding recently at their residence, Waipapa road, Hataitai, Wellington. Owing to the indifferent health of Mr. Hatfield only members of the family and near rela--tions attended, but a very happy reunion resulted. A beautiful two-decker cake (the present of the bridesmaid— Mrs. A. Logan) graced the table, and a basket of flowers was presented to Mrs. Hatfield by little Margaret Hat. field. During the evening greetings and congratulations from station 2ZW were broadcasted, and the proceedings ended in the time-honoured fashion, with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." Mrs. Hatfield, the only daughter of the late John Tustin, arrived in Wellington with her parents on the 2nd February, 1874, in tho ship Ocean Mail (Cap» tain Watson), Mr. Hatueld arriving about a year later. Both families came from Sheffield, England. Work for Seamen. "For the past 28 years.our hospital visitor (Mrs. Craig) has been engaged in her-work," states the annual report of the Wellington branch of the British Sailors' Society. "On no occasion has she missed visiting the men who are laid aside with sickness and taking them fruit, eggs, tobacco, and cigarettes, besides many little home-made delicacies that are so dear to the heart of the seafarer. Their grateful thanks for the kindness shown testify to the good work done. The society's thanks are due to Mrs. Craig for the wonderful way in which she has carried out her duties in all weathers for "so many years." Reform League Women's Auxiliary. Mrs. Stone presided over a good attendance of members at the veeent meeting of the Women's Auxiliary of tho New Zealand Political Reform League. Votes of sympathy were passed to the relatives of the late Mrs. Niven, and to. Lady Poinarc in her sad loss. The Hon. A. > Hamilton (Minister of Labour) gave a most interesting and instructive address on tho exchange rate. After, tho Minister had answered a number of questions, a vote of thanks was passed, and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. . For Unemployed Girls. The third successful party given by tho. staff, of C. Smith, Ltd., was held recently at the home of Miss M. Page, Rongotai terrace. An enjoyable evening was spent in dancing, games, and competitions, a special feature being a humorous recitation • by Miss-:R6ma Bitossi. Among those present wero Mr..and Mrs. A. A large number of Wellington' members of the Methodist Women's Missionary Union assembled in Wesley Hall, under tho presidency of Mrs. J. F. Rowo, to meet tho Rev. A. H. Cropp, of tho Solomon Islands, whose charge; is 500 miles,from the head station at Soviana. His is pioneering work, and the 'village women, of. whom ho spoke, are still the burden bearers, doingl the heavier work and rearing their families. Their marriage customs are re-spected-by the missionary, and, incidentally, it is he who is expected to provide the ring. Mr. Cropp told of the .work of Mrs. Cropp and Sister Elizabeth Common among the women, and urged;the need of deeper interest. The gift boxes ' sent from New Zealand were ivery welcome. During the afternoon, (Sirs. Nieolson sang, and a vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. The hall was brightened with bowls of and tea and a social hour "brought an interesting meeting to a close. Mt. Victoria Croquet Club. Tho president, Mrs. Chirnside, presided at the annual general meeting of the Mount Victoria Croquet Club The' report and balance-sheet showed the club to be in a good financial position. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs. Campbell; vice-president, Mrs. MoGill; secretary, Mrs. Jones; treasurer. ■Mrs. Wallis (re-elected); captain, Mrs. Cleary (re-elected); ' deputy-captain. Chirrisidp, was accorded a vote of thanks for her untiring efforts to further the interests of the club during her period in office. -.■■;■■ Staff Dance. The first of a series of socials arranged by the Wellington group of National °Eeprioniy Stores -.(Star Stores (Wellington), Ltd., and Oswald M. Smith and Co., Ltd.) was held recently in the Palm. Court Tearooms. The evening proved most successful, and about.loo members of the staff and their friends-thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The programme consisted of dancing, competitions, and items by Messrs. Burfr and McLellan. Mr. Rich-

ards carried out the duties of M.C. in a most capable manner. The success of this social promises well for future functions. The Mothers' Club of the Taranaki Street Free Kindergarten held a most enjoyable concert in the Kindergarten recently, over one hundred people being present. The programme, which included pianoforte and vocal duets, songs, monologues, and dancing, was contributed by Mesdames Hodgson, Gochrane, Crawford, Misses Hodgson, J. Vardey, M. Outrim, M. Oates, and Messrs. Kendall, Outrim, and Houston. Consular Dinner Party. The Consul-General for' the United States of America,'' Mr. Calvin M. Hitch, and Mrs. Hitch,- entertained a number of guests at dinner last evening at the Midland Hotel. Small silk flags made an attractive addition to the table decorations^ for which vases of Iceland poppies and maidenhair fernwere used. Mrs. Hitch wore a becoming frock of deep wedgewood blue lace and a short jacket of the same. The guests included Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Gotlieb, Mr. W. F. Boyle (American Consul in Auckland), . The nurses' report, which was presented to the District Nursing Guild of St. John at the recent committee meeting proved that the work was increasing among the sick poor of the city. More funds and donations of goods are more and .more required as the_ winter advances. The number of patients admitted during May were 28, discharged 19, sent to hospital 1, re-' maining on register 47, sisters' visits to homes 172, and patients' visits to surgery 272.
