Detective-Sergeant Bevell said, that the charges arose out of the street disturbance on 10th May. It . was alleged that the defendant played a prominent part' in tho demonstration outside the Parliament House gates, and that near the end he called out: "Come on, boys; up the town; stick together right across the road. . There's only one thing to do. We'll show them." Tho defendant, evidence would show, was seen to knock over a Hindu's barrow and later assault two shop employees who were guarding their windows. -
Evidence along these lines was given by a number of witnesses, but the defendant alleged that it was a case of mistaken identity. He said that lie had followed the crowd up the town quietly with. his wife, and that he had taken no part in the rioting.
Iv order to allow further evidence to be called on behalf of the defendant, the case was adjourned for "a, week.
