AMBULANCE GRANT
WITHDRAWN BY COUNCIL
REGRET EXPRESSED
Bogrct that the City Council couia make no grant to the Wellington Free Ambulance for the present financial year owing to restricted finance was expressed by members at a meeting of the board to-day. Advice that no grant could be made was contained in a letter to the board.
The chairman, Mr. C.J. B. Norwood, saia he regretted that the City Council, unlike other public bodies, ivas unable to regard the Free Ambulance as one of tho unavoidable charges that must bo met. .' [
In answer to a question, the superintendent (Mr. F. Koffe) said.that fourfifths of the cases attended were in the city. .- • • , ' ■ '■/.-.. The board was very grateful, said the chairman, to all those public bodies which regarded the Free Ambulance as essential.
Mr. Marcus Marks: "I think we should reply to the effect that in view of the fact that all the other local bodies outside the district finaing themBelves able subscribe a little, we regret that as four-fifths of the cases attended are in Wellington, the City Council is not considering the Free Ambulance essential. .. . There is always the prospective danger of the ambulance; dropping right out through the withdrawal of contributions, and if that happened it would be a great ioss to the city." Mr. G.: Mitchell sfiid the council,did not consider the fact that the bulk of the-- attention given was in the city. "You would think human lives would bo one of the basic considerations, but: apparently they are not," he said. : ■ The superintendent was instructed to reply to the City Council along the lines suggested by Mr. Marks. • -■
