WEATHER CHANGES

TROPICAL : DISTURBANCE

A complete change has taken, place in the meteorological situation in; Australia. For over a month pressure has been unusually low in the interior and in the North, and on Friday last these conditions 'became accentuated. On Saturday, however, an anti-cyclone from tho west spread rapidly over the country, and yesterday barometers wore everywhere high for this time of tho year. The locus of disturbance has apparently shifted from northern Australia to the Fiji-Tongan area, where a tropical cyclone has developed. This disturbance has caused a continuance of southerly winds ove- New Zealand, and has prevented a westerly depression from developing normally. This morning the anti-cyclone from 'Australia had spread to southern New Zealand where, very high barometer readings were recorded. In consequence there was a marked freshening of the southerly winds, especially about and north of Cook Strait, and rain was falling iv the east coast districts between Kaikoura and East Cape. Western districts were experiencing fine weather. Both Auckland and Wellington had' fine weather during the woek-nd, yesterday especially being a perfect day with warm sunshine. Saturday was rather cooler—light and moderate southerlics were the prevailing winds. At Wellington ,this morning it was dull and cool, with a strong southerly wind and some misty rain. There was ' a strong north-east breezo at Christehurch on Saturday, and the weather was dull. Yesterday the morning was sunny, but in the afternoon a southerly change occurred and some light rain followed At Dunedin Saturday was cloudy with a stiff north-easter. Tho southerly change occurred there before 9 am yesterday, and the day was dull and showery.

The forecast is for southerly to southeasterly winds, strong about and north of Cook Strait, but light to moderate in other parts. Cloudy and showery weather is expected in eastern . districts between Kaikouni and East Cape, but improving gradually during the night. In other districts fair to nne weather should prevail. -Temperatures will be cool in the eastern part of the North Island.
