INCOME TAX
PERIOD FOR PAYMENT
EXTENSION NOT PROPOSED
The suggestion was made some little time ago that income tax payments should be extended over a longer period in order to ease the burden on taxpayers, but according to a ' statement made in Christehurch by tho Prime Minister (the Eight Hon. G. W. Forbes) such action would seriously embarrass the Government's finances. At the same time, the Prime Minister indicated that the Commissioner of Taxes would givo overy consideration to difficult cases.
"IWith falling revenue in every direction," said Mr. Forbes, "an extension of the term for the payment of income tax would be a serious thing. Indeed, I am inclined to make an appeal, such an appeal as the Chancellor of the Exchequer has recontly made in England, and ask the taxpayers of the Dominion to assist the. Government by prompt payment. Prompt payment will help tho Government considerably, but may I repeat that where taxpayers are in. real difficulties the Commissioner of Taxes, if application is made to him, will extend every consideration."
