GOOD TRENTHAM HAND

FOR MARLBOROUGH RACES

SEVERAL WORKING WELL

In spite of formidable opposition, (lie Trenlham contingent to race at Blenheim this week should give a good account of itself, and i J. will be -surprising if a reasonable shave of the stake-money is not brought back across the Strait. Among those who are likely to race prominently are Retract, Palm, Gold Sand, Weatherstep, Lady Eene, and Pedestal.

Retract and Pahu will contest the principal handicaps. Judged on recent performances the former is the better of the pair, and he is one who may well win a good race at the meeting. He has made rapid progress lately, and, although it is a fair stride from highweights to open handicaps, he is likely successfully to bridge the gap, even if not this week, then betore the season is much further advanced. The class will be quite useful at Blenheim, but it should not bo beyond either Eetraet or x Jahu. Gold Sand ' and Weatherstep are two hacks with undeniably bright chances of success. Nothing has been sprinting better than this pair at Trentham during the past week, and the former also has good recent winning form behind her. Gold Sand is most reasonably handicapped m both the Pelorus Hack Handicap and in the Open Blenheim Handicap (m which she is on the minimum), and, although the class of the latter ovent may yet be above her, she will be one of the hardest horses to beat if started in the hack event. Weatherstep is also iv the lelorus Hack Handicap, in which she will be in receipt of 111b from Gold Sand, and should she reproduce her track form better than she- did at the recent Wellington Meeting, she too would be in at the finish. Lady Eene and Pedestal are stablemates of Pahu's who may come to light if the open handicapper is not up to winning m his class.

Lady Hene/as she was doing prior to the holidays, is ; again galloping smartly, but there must still be a doubt about her solidarity. At Trentham recently, and apparently also at Tauherenikau previously, her hind legs went from beneath her when the pace was applied, and hard pressure may again find a weakness. In her latest work, however, she has galloped perfectly soundly. Pedestal is a recent addition to Goodman s team, and an effort will probably be made to win one of the maiden1 events with him. As he is from one of the best brood mares in the Dominion, it is really astonishing that he has not yet won his way put of novice ranks. He is workins well, but apparently he failed his former Wanganui connections many times after doing all that they had asked from him.

These are probably the likeliest of the Trentham horses to race at the meeting, but others who are among the fields and who are not without chances of picking up some of the stakes if taken across are Solitaire 11., Shootist, Peep, Dainty Ways, Royal Game, and Portray.
