LIFE-SAVING
DEMONSTRATION AT EAST-
BOURNE
As a stimulus to a movement to form a life-saving club for Day's Bay and adjoining bcii-lie;, the Lyall Bay, YVorser Bay, Island Bay, and Maranui Surf and Life-saving Clubs gave a demonstration before several hundred 'spectators at Eastbourne yesterday. The programme was arranged by the Wellington head centre of the Royal Rife-saving Society.-Mr. J. G. Hunter was marshal, Mr. 1Y Chapman was liandicappcr, and Mr. N. A. Ingram conductor of the demonstration, which, consisted of surf races, pennant races, and rescue exhibitions by competitive teams. An aggregate of seven events counted for a life-saving belt presented by the Eastbourne Borough Council. The belt was won by the Lyall Bay Club with 26 points out of a possible 28. Worser Bay Club was second with 20 points, and the Islaud Bay teams were awarded 18 points. The Maranui Club contested only two events, and secured 5 points.
The gathering was addressed by Mr. S. I". Fisher, Mayor of Eastbourne. Mr. 6. S. Hill, president of the Royal Life-sav-ing Society, urged the Borough Council and Eastbourne residents to support the local effort to establish a club. He said a skilled instructor was available, and there should be no lack of enthusiastic swimmers to form a competent body of life-savers. Tha move would need-equip-ment, anil it was in the interest of Eastbourne and residents that this should be provided.
